Alþingi is Iceland’s national parliament and one of the oldest continuous legislative assemblies in the world, established in 930 AD. It functions as the primary decision-making body, where elected representatives debate, create, amend, and pass laws to govern the country. The Alþingi also oversees the government’s actions, approves budgets, and represents the interests of Icelanders. Its historic assembly originally met at Þingvellir and has evolved into a modern parliamentary institution situated in Reykjavik. Overall, it plays a central role in Icelandic democracy, ensuring governance through collective deliberation and legislative process.
