Afro-Shirazi Party
The Afro-Shirazi Party (ASP) was a political movement in Zanzibar established in 1957, primarily representing Afro-Shirazi Africans who sought greater political rights and independence from colonial rule. It aimed to address racial and economic inequalities and promote self-governance. The ASP played a significant role in Zanzibar's push for independence from Britain in the early 1960s and later merged with other groups to form the Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM), Tanzania’s dominant political party. In essence, the ASP was a key player in Zanzibar’s decolonization process and the broader movement toward unified independence for Tanzania.
