
Afonso Henriques
Afonso Henriques was the first king of Portugal, ruling from 1139 to 1185. He emerged as a key figure in the Christian Reconquista, aiming to reclaim territory from Muslim rule in the Iberian Peninsula. Born around 1109, he began his military campaigns early, successfully capturing significant regions, including Lisbon. Afonso declared Portugal an independent kingdom from León, establishing its borders and governance.
