Aflatoxicosis
Aflatoxicosis is poisoning caused by consuming foods contaminated with aflatoxins, toxic substances produced by certain mold fungi, mainly Aspergillus species. These fungi often grow on crops like stored grains, nuts, and legumes under warm, humid conditions. Ingesting contaminated food can cause acute symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and liver damage, and in severe cases, it may be fatal. Chronic exposure, even at lower levels, can lead to liver cancer and weaken the immune system. Proper crop storage, screening, and avoiding moldy foods are key to prevention.
