Aequoria victoria
Aequorea victoria is a type of jellyfish found along the Pacific Coast of North America. It appears transparent and has a bell-shaped body. This jellyfish is notable because it produces a greenish-blue bioluminescent glow, especially when disturbed or during the night. The glow is due to special proteins called aequorin and green fluorescent protein (GFP). Scientists use GFP extensively in biological research as a marker to visualize and track cellular processes because it glows brightly under certain light conditions, making it an invaluable tool in understanding biology at the cellular level.
