Aegospotami (river)

The Aegospotami was a river in ancient Greece near the Hellespont (now Dardanelles). It was significant in the 5th century BCE because of the Battle of Aegospotami in 405 BCE, where the Spartan navy, led by Lysander, decisively defeated the Athenian fleet. This victory effectively ended the Peloponnesian War, leading to Athens' surrender. The river itself was a strategic location for naval movements, serving as a critical point for controlling access to the Aegean Sea. Today, the site is near modern-day Turkey's European coast.
