Activated sludge

Activated sludge is a key process in wastewater treatment where microorganisms, primarily bacteria, break down organic matter and pollutants in sewage. During treatment, air is pumped into a tank containing the sewage and these microbes, which are kept in a mixed suspension. The microorganisms consume the organic waste, turning it into simpler compounds, while forming clumps called flocs. Afterward, the sludge is separated from the cleaned water, some of which is recycled back to promote the growth of more microbes, ensuring efficient treatment. This process helps clean the water before it is released back into the environment.
