Aceh Peace Agreement
The Aceh Peace Agreement, signed in 2005, ended a nearly 30-year conflict between the Indonesian government and the Free Aceh Movement (GAM), which sought independence for Aceh. The deal granted Aceh special autonomy, allowing for greater self-governance, including managing its natural resources and legal system, while remaining part of Indonesia. It also included provisions for disarmament, reintegration of former rebels, and development aid to rebuild the province. The agreement aimed to bring lasting peace, stability, and economic growth to Aceh by addressing historical grievances and political aspirations through dialogue rather than conflict.
