Abusive Head Trauma

Abusive Head Trauma (AHT), often called shaken baby syndrome, occurs when a caregiver violently shakes an infant or young child, causing the brain to move within the skull. This force can lead to severe brain injury, bleeding, and swelling, potentially resulting in permanent damage or death. The shaking happens because the caregiver may be frustrated or overwhelmed, but it is never justified. Recognizing that infants are especially vulnerable due to their developing brains and weak neck muscles highlights the importance of never shaking a child. Immediate medical attention is crucial if AHT is suspected.
