Abacha Regime
The Abacha regime refers to the period when Sani Abacha was Nigeria's military ruler from 1993 to 1998. He took power through a coup and led as an authoritarian leader, suppressing political opposition and restricting civil liberties. His government was marked by corruption, massive embezzlement of public funds, and human rights abuses. Abacha’s regime also faced international criticism for its undemocratic practices. Despite his controversial leadership, Nigeria transitioned back to civilian rule shortly after his death in 1998, moving toward democracy.
