AATD (Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency)

Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency (AATD) is a genetic condition where the body doesn't produce enough alpha-1 antitrypsin, a protein that protects the lungs and liver from damage caused by enzymes. Without enough this protein, the lungs can become inflamed and damaged, leading to conditions like emphysema or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), even in non-smokers. It can also cause liver problems such as cirrhosis. AATD is inherited, meaning it runs in families. Proper diagnosis involves blood tests, and management includes monitoring, lifestyle adjustments, and sometimes therapy like protein replacement to slow further damage.
