305-meter dish
The 305-meter dish refers to the Arecibo Observatory's large radio telescope located in Puerto Rico. Constructed in 1963, it was one of the world's largest single-dish radio telescopes, used for various scientific purposes, including radio astronomy, atmospheric science, and radar observations of planets. Its size allowed it to detect faint signals from distant celestial objects, contributing significantly to our understanding of the universe. The observatory also famously transmitted a binary-coded message into space in 1974, aimed at potential extraterrestrial life. Unfortunately, the dish collapsed in December 2020, marking the end of an important scientific era.
