Chronic Granulomatous Disease (CGD) is a genetic condition that affects the immune system, making it difficult for the body to fight off certain infections. In CGD patients, white blood cells cannot effectively kill some bacteria and fungi due to a defect in producing reactive oxygen species, crucial for breaking down these pathogens. This leads to frequent and severe infections, particularly with certain kinds of bacteria and fungi. The body tries to compensate by forming granulomas, which are clusters of immune cells, but this can cause tissue damage and further complications, reflecting the struggle to control infections.
