β2-adrenergic agonists

β2-adrenergic agonists are medications that relax the muscles around the airways in the lungs, making it easier to breathe. They work by stimulating specific receptors called β2 receptors, which cause airway muscles to loosen and open up. These drugs are commonly used to quickly relieve symptoms of asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) during breathing difficulties. Examples include albuterol and salmeterol. They are effective for short-term relief and long-term control but should be used as directed to avoid side effects like rapid heartbeat.
