1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus
The 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus was a military operation by Turkey in response to a Greek-supported coup aiming for union with Greece. Tensions between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots had grown over the years, leading to violence. After the coup, Turkey launched an invasion, claiming to protect Turkish Cypriots. The conflict resulted in the occupation of about 37% of the island’s territory by Turkish forces, dividing Cyprus along the Green Line. The invasion caused significant displacement, with many Greek Cypriots fleeing the north and Turkish Cypriots moving south, creating a lasting division that remains today.
