1964 Zanzibar Revolution
The 1964 Zanzibar Revolution was a political upheaval that led to the overthrow of the Sultan of Zanzibar and the establishment of a republic. In January 1964, frustrated by racial inequality and economic disparity, mainly African inhabitants and revolutionary groups rose against the Arab-dominated government. They successfully ousted the Sultan, leading to the establishment of the People's Republic of Zanzibar and Pemba. Soon after, Zanzibar merged with mainland Tanganyika to form Tanzania. The revolution marked a significant shift toward independence and social change in Zanzibar, ending centuries of Arab rule and influence on the island.
