1948 India-Pakistan War
The 1948 India-Pakistan War was a conflict that arose shortly after India and Pakistan gained independence from British rule in 1947. The two new nations fought primarily over the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir, which both claimed. Following tribal invasions by Pakistan, the Maharaja of Kashmir sought India's help, leading to India's military intervention. A war ensued, resulting in a UN-mediated ceasefire in 1949. The ceasefire line established a division of Kashmir, with India controlling one part and Pakistan another. This conflict laid the groundwork for ongoing tensions and disputes between India and Pakistan that continue today.
