1947 Refugee Crisis
The 1947 Refugee Crisis emerged from the partition of British India into two independent nations, India and Pakistan. This process triggered widespread communal violence, leading to the mass displacement of approximately 15 million people along religious lines; Hindus and Sikhs moved to India, while Muslims migrated to Pakistan. The crisis involved severe human suffering, including loss of life and property, as well as social and economic upheaval. The new governments faced challenges in addressing the needs of the refugees, resulting in lasting impacts on both countries' demographics and relations.
