1947 Malagasy Uprising

The 1947 Malagasy Uprising was a revolt in Madagascar against French colonial rule, sparked by anger over forced labor, land policies, and inequality. Malagasy people wanted independence and fair treatment after years of exploitation. The uprising began in March 1947 and quickly spread across the island. French forces responded with harsh military actions, resulting in a brutal crackdown that caused thousands of deaths. Although the uprising was suppressed, it highlighted Malagasy demands for self-rule and contributed to Madagascar’s eventual independence in 1960.
