1921 Tulsa massacre
The 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre was a violent attack in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where a white mob destroyed the prosperous Black neighborhood known as Greenwood, often called the "Black Wall Street." Tensions rose after a Black man was accused of assaulting a white woman, leading to false accusations and racial rumors. Over two days, mobs looted, burned homes, businesses, and churches, killing an estimated 100-300 Black residents and injuring many more. The massacre erased years of Black economic progress and left thousands homeless, and for decades, it was largely omitted from American history until it gained greater recognition decades later.
