1767-68 uprising
The 1767-68 uprising, also known as the Sannyasi Rebellion, occurred in Bengal, India, primarily involving wandering monks (Sannyasis) and peasants. Triggered by the economic hardships and oppressive taxation imposed by the British East India Company following famine and economic decline, the uprising represented local resistance against British rule. The Sannyasis sought to protect their rights and the welfare of the poor. The rebellion highlighted the growing discontent with British authority and set the stage for future revolts against colonial rule in India. It marked an important moment in the broader struggle for Indian self-determination.
