1755 Tsunami
The 1755 tsunami was triggered by a massive earthquake off the coast of Portugal, estimated at magnitude 8.5-9.0. This earthquake caused the seafloor to shift abruptly, displacing vast volumes of water and generating a tsunami wave. The wave traveled across the Atlantic, impacting coastal areas in Portugal, Spain, Morocco, the Caribbean, and even as far as Brazil. It caused widespread destruction, flooding, and loss of life. This event is notable as one of the earliest well-documented tsunamis, illustrating the destructive power of undersea earthquakes and the importance of understanding such natural hazards.
