1258 Barons' Revolt

The 1258 Barons' Revolt was a rebellion by English nobles against King Henry III. The barons were unhappy with the king’s heavy-handed rule and how he managed his land and finances. They demanded reforms and greater control over governance. When negotiations failed, the barons forcefully took control of London and forced the king to agree to the Provisions of Oxford, which limited his powers and established a council to oversee the government. This revolt was a key moment in the struggle between monarchy and barons, influencing early ideas of limiting royal power and shaping future constitutional discussions in England.
