Zymogen

A zymogen, also known as a proenzyme, is an inactive form of an enzyme. It is produced and stored in the body to prevent premature enzyme activity that could damage tissues. When needed, specific signals activate the zymogen, transforming it into an active enzyme that can carry out its function, such as digesting food or breaking down proteins. For example, the digestive enzyme pepsin starts as pepsinogen in the stomach and is activated by the acidic environment. This controlled activation helps regulate processes smoothly and protect the body's tissues from harm.
