Zhaogongyuan (Buried Palace)
Zhaogongyuan, also known as the Buried Palace, is an ancient imperial complex buried beneath the city of Beijing, built during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). It served as the original imperial palace before the Forbidden City was constructed. Though largely concealed and not open to the public, archaeological excavations have revealed its layout, including palace halls, courtyards, and city defenses. The site offers valuable insights into early Ming imperial architecture and urban planning, reflecting the grandeur and political significance of China’s imperial history while remaining largely hidden beneath the modern city.
