Zeugma (ancient city)

Zeugma was an ancient city located strategically along the Euphrates River in what is now Turkey. Founded around the 3rd century BCE, it served as a key military and trade hub connecting Persia, Greece, and later the Roman Empire. Its name means "bridge" or "crossing" in Greek, reflecting its role as a vital crossing point. Zeugma is renowned for its impressive mosaics and sophisticated architecture, showcasing the cultural blending of different civilizations. Today, much of the city is submerged under the Birecik Dam reservoir, but archaeological discoveries continue to reveal its historical significance as a crossroads of ancient cultures.
