Zanamivir (Relenza)
Zanamivir (brand name Relenza) is an antiviral medication used to treat influenza (the flu). It works by blocking the enzyme neuraminidase, which the flu virus uses to spread within the body. By inhibiting this enzyme, Zanamivir helps stop the virus from multiplying and reducing the severity and duration of flu symptoms. It is usually inhaled using a special device and works best when taken early in the illness. While effective, it’s most useful when started within 48 hours of symptom onset and is generally prescribed for certain groups, like those at high risk of complications.
