Zamorin of Calicut

The Zamorin of Calicut was a powerful Hindu ruler in southern India, governing the city of Calicut (present-day Kozhikode) from around the 12th to 18th centuries. As the regional monarch, he controlled trade, especially in spices like pepper, attracting merchants from Arabia, Europe, and Asia. The Zamorin’s court was a center of culture and commerce, playing a significant role in regional politics and trade networks. His influence declined with the advent of European colonization, particularly the British, who eventually took control of the area. The Zamorin remains a notable historical and cultural figure in Kerala.
