Zakat (charitable giving)
Zakat is an Islamic obligation of giving a fixed portion of one’s wealth—usually 2.5% of savings and certain assets—annualy to those in need. It serves as both a form of worship and social responsibility, aiming to redistribute wealth, reduce inequality, and support community welfare. The practice encourages Muslims to purify their wealth, foster generosity, and ensure economic justice. Zakat is distinct from voluntary charity (sadaqah) but complements it by creating a structured, obligatory system of helping those who are less fortunate.
