Zaju
Zaju is a traditional Chinese theatrical form originating in the 12th century, combining singing, storytelling, acting, and music. It was performed on stage with actors portraying various characters, often reflecting historical and social themes. Zaju features poetic lyrics and music, with each play divided into acts called "acts" or “scenes,” and employs a mix of dialogue, song, and dance. It became popular during the Yuan Dynasty and influenced later Chinese drama. Its accessible format and engaging storytelling made it an important cultural expression, blending literary art with theatrical performance.
