Zaire (formerly Congo)
Zaire was the name of the country now known as the Democratic Republic of the Congo, in Central Africa. It was called Zaire from 1971 to 1997, during a period when the government promoted African identity and nationalism under dictator Mobutu Sese Seko. The country is extremely resource-rich, especially in minerals like cobalt and copper, but has faced ongoing challenges such as political instability, conflict, and economic difficulties. Its diverse culture and large rainforest are significant, and its capital is Kinshasa, one of Africa’s largest cities. The country reverted to the name Democratic Republic of the Congo in 1997.
