Zahir al-Umar

Zahir al-Umar was an 18th-century Arab ruler and leader of Palestine’s Galilee region. He established an autonomous, semi-independent state, strengthening local economy and fortifying cities like Acre. Known for resisting Ottoman control, he built alliances, modernized defenses, and promoted trade. His leadership helped stabilize the area during a tumultuous period, laying foundations for regional development. Despite Ottoman efforts to reassert control, his influence persisted until his death in 1775. Zahir al-Umar is remembered as a significant local figure who advanced economic growth and autonomy in the Levant during his era.
