Yuzpe regimen
The Yuzpe regimen is a method of emergency contraception using regular combined oral contraceptive pills containing both estrogen and progestin. It involves taking certain doses of these pills shortly after unprotected sex to reduce the risk of pregnancy. The process typically includes taking multiple pills at specific intervals within 72 hours after sexual activity. The regimen works by delaying or preventing ovulation, thereby decreasing the chance of fertilization. While effective, it can cause side effects like nausea and isn't as reliable as other emergency contraception options like dedicated morning-after pills. It’s best used as a last resort when other options aren’t available.
