Yugoslavia (ICTY)
The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) was a court established by the United Nations in 1993 to prosecute serious crimes committed during the Yugoslav Wars (1990s). It aimed to hold individuals accountable for actions like genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity, fostering justice and reconciliation. The ICTY demonstrated that such atrocities could be addressed legally, emphasizing accountability for leaders and fighters alike. It operated until 2017, issuing verdicts that contributed significantly to international efforts to combat impunity for war crimes.
