Yngling

The Yngling is a Scandinavian sailing vessel originating from the Viking Age, around 650-950 AD. Known for its lightweight, beamy design, it was constructed primarily from wood with a single mast and a square sail, making it versatile for both warfare and trade. The Yngling played a significant role in early maritime exploration and combat, and its design influenced later Scandinavian ships. Today, it is also the name of a competitive sailing class used in the Olympics, derived from the historic ship’s design principles to promote traditional sailing skills.
