Yersinia
Yersinia is a genus of bacteria, with the most well-known species being Yersinia pestis, which causes plague. These bacteria are tiny microorganisms that can infect humans through bites from fleas or contact with infected animals, leading to illnesses like bubonic, septicemic, or pneumonic plague. Some Yersinia species also cause gastrointestinal issues, such as enteritis, through contaminated food or water. Yersinia bacteria can survive in cold environments like refrigerated foods, making proper food handling important. While some strains can be dangerous, most infections are preventable and treatable with antibiotics.
