Yellowstone Volcano Observatory

The Yellowstone Volcano Observatory (YVO) monitors volcanic and earthquake activity in and around Yellowstone National Park to provide early warnings and protect public safety. It uses a network of sensors, including seismographs, ground deformation tools, and gas analyzers, to track signs of possible eruptions or increased volcanic activity. By analyzing this data, scientists can better understand the volcano's behavior, assess risks, and inform authorities and the public. Despite its reputation, Yellowstone’s volcano shows signs of activity very far in advance, and eruptions are extremely rare, occurring on geological timescales.
