Yamamoto's assassination

Yamamoto Isoroku, the commander of Japan's navy during World War II, was assassinated on April 18, 1943, by American bombers in an aerial attack over Bougainville Island. U.S. intelligence had decoded Yamamoto’s flight plans and learned he was traveling by airplane. They relayed this information to strike aircraft, which then shot down his plane, killing him instantly. This targeted operation aimed to eliminate a key military leader, disrupting Japanese strategic planning. The attack was a rare example of a successful, intelligence-driven assassination by the Allies during the war, significantly impacting Japanese naval leadership.
