
Xu Guangqi
Xu Guangqi was a prominent Chinese scholar, scientist, and government official of the late Ming Dynasty (1562–1633). He is known for integrating Western scientific knowledge, especially astronomy and mathematics, into Chinese thought. A trained mathematician and collaborator with Jesuit missionaries, he helped introduce Western technology and ideas to China. Xu also contributed to agricultural reforms and Confucian studies, advocating for practical advancements alongside traditional values. His work laid important groundwork for scientific progress in China and exemplifies the bridging of Eastern and Western knowledge during a period of cultural and intellectual exchange.
