Xinjiang internment camps
The Xinjiang internment camps are detention centers in China’s Xinjiang region where, according to reports, more than a million Uyghurs and other Muslim minorities have been held since around 2017. The Chinese government describes these facilities as vocational training centers aimed at combating extremism and promoting employment. However, human rights organizations and Western governments allege that many detainees face systematic human rights abuses, including forced labor, political indoctrination, and suppression of cultural and religious practices. The situation remains a significant international concern, highlighting tensions over security, ethnic identity, and human rights in China.
