Wuchereria bancrofti

Wuchereria bancrofti is a parasitic worm responsible for causing lymphatic filariasis, a disease transmitted through mosquito bites. The worms living in the lymphatic system can block normal fluid drainage, leading to swelling, often in the legs, arms, or genital area. Many infected people experience no symptoms, but some develop severe swelling known as elephantiasis. The infection is common in tropical and subtropical regions. It can be prevented through mosquito control and the use of bed nets, and treated with medications that kill the worms, helping to reduce transmission and alleviate symptoms.
