Wounded Knee Occupation
The Wounded Knee Occupation was a 71-day protest beginning in February 1973, at the site of the 1890 Massacre of Native Americans. Led by members of the American Indian Movement (AIM), it aimed to highlight issues such as broken treaties, government corruption, and mistreatment of Native peoples. Armed tensions and negotiations followed, drawing national attention to Indigenous rights. The occupation ended without loss of life, but it marked a pivotal moment in Native activism, fostering greater awareness and support for Native sovereignty and justice.
