World Ocean Circulation Experiment

The World Ocean Circulation Experiment (WOCE) was a large international research project conducted in the 1990s to study how ocean currents move and distribute heat, nutrients, and gases around the globe. By collecting detailed measurements of temperature, salinity, and currents, WOCE helped scientists understand the role of the ocean in Earth's climate system. Its findings improved climate models, showing how ocean circulation influences weather patterns, sea level, and carbon storage. Essentially, WOCE deepened our knowledge of the ocean’s global flow patterns and their importance for Earth's climate and environment.
