World Commission on Environment and Development (WCED)
The World Commission on Environment and Development (WCED), established in 1983 by the United Nations, aimed to address global environmental challenges while promoting sustainable development. It brought together experts and leaders to assess how economic growth affects the environment and future generations. In 1987, it published the influential report "Our Common Future," which popularized the concept of sustainable developmentāmeeting present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet theirs. The WCED's work has helped shape international policies focused on balancing economic progress with environmental preservation for long-term well-being.
