World Commission on Environment and Development (Brundtland Commission)

The World Commission on Environment and Development, commonly known as the Brundtland Commission, was established in 1983 by the United Nations. Its goal was to address global environmental issues and promote sustainable development. The Commission, chaired by former Norwegian Prime Minister Gro Harlem Brundtland, defined sustainable development as meeting the needs of the present without compromising future generations' ability to meet their own needs. In 1987, it released the influential report "Our Common Future," which highlighted the interconnectedness of economic growth, environmental protection, and social equity, shaping future discussions on sustainability worldwide.
