Work-related asthma

Work-related asthma is a condition where exposure to certain substances or environments in the workplace causes or worsens asthma symptoms. These triggers can include chemicals, dust, fumes, or biological agents. The symptoms—such as coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, and chest tightness—typically improve when away from work and may persist or worsen during the workweek. It can develop after prolonged exposure (sensitizer-induced) or result from constant irritation (irritant-induced). Recognizing and minimizing exposure, along with medical management, are key to controlling the condition and preventing long-term lung damage.
