Women's Auxiliary Air Force

The Women's Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF) was a British women’s military organization established during World War II in 1939. It aimed to free up men for combat roles by enlisting women to perform essential support tasks within the Royal Air Force. Members of the WAAF served in various roles, including in communications, administration, and logistics, contributing significantly to the war effort. The WAAF helped pave the way for women's greater involvement in the military and demonstrated the important roles women can play in defense and aviation. It was disbanded in 1949, becoming part of the regular RAF.
