WIPP

WIPP, or the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant, is a government-owned site in New Mexico designed for safely storing legally authorized radioactive waste from nuclear power plants and defense activities. It is an underground facility located deep within a salt formation, which naturally encloses and isolates the waste, preventing radiation from reaching the environment. WIPP's purpose is to contain and isolate radioactive materials for thousands of years, protecting people and the environment from potential harm while ensuring safe management of nuclear waste.
