Windward and Leeward
Windward and leeward are terms used to describe positions relative to the direction of the wind. Windward refers to the side facing the wind — the area from which the wind originates. Leeward is the opposite side, sheltered from the wind, downwind from the source. For example, if you stand on the side of a mountain where the wind hits first, you're on the windward side; the sheltered side is leeward. These concepts are important in weather, sailing, and geography, as they influence climate, vegetation, and navigation.
