William Oughtred
William Oughtred (1574–1660) was an influential English mathematician and clergyman. He is best known for inventing the slide rule, a manual calculating device used before electronic calculators, which allowed for rapid multiplication, division, and other functions. Oughtred also contributed to mathematical notation and education, promoting clearer ways to represent and teach math concepts. His work helped advance computational tools and mathematical understanding during the 17th century, making complex calculations more accessible for scientists and engineers of his time.
